Yeah, the year started with a fierce contest in the second largest gaming market in the world. Although January is weak in sales, the PS4 won the Xbox One in the United States in the first month of 2017.
Winning won, but as in December 2016, the Sony console would have narrowly missed. At least that’s what Microsoft suggests.
The US, Xbox One had its best month in January since launch and was the only console in the eighth generation to have annual growth in that month compared to January 2015, according to the NPD Group. The Xbox Team is committed to delivering the best gaming experiences to our fans Mike Nichols, Head of Marketing, Xbox Division.
The news is exciting as Microsoft’s console has grown in a weak month even though it has no proper release. In fact, the biggest launch of January was the multiplatform Resident Evil VII, but in consoles, he was most noticed on PS4.
The reason? The Sony console features the PS VR, a virtual reality accessory. And the RE7 was meant to demonstrate such technology, harnessing it to compose the game’s horror mood. Unfortunately, the Xbox One still does not have virtual reality support, but most likely that Project Scorpio will bring such technology. So whoever bought the RE7 on Xbox One will not enjoy 100% of the terror mood promised for such a Capcom title. Exclusive even the PS4 received Gravity Rush 2 and Yakuza 0 in January.
Although for now, virtual reality has not pulled as many sales of consoles. In fact, regarding annual sales of consoles in the United States, we have the following:
|ANNUAL CONSOLES SALES IN THE UNITED STATES|
|Playstation 4||4,680,000 units||5,740,000 units||5,090,000 units|
|Xbox one||4,360,000 units||4,940,000 units||4,730,000 units|
|(New) Nintendo 3DS||2,580,000 units||2,420,000 units||2,470,000 units|
|Wii U||1,570,000 units||1,340,000 units||665,000 units|

|PS3||740,000 units||Unavailable data||Unavailable data|
|NES Classic Edition||–||–||419,000 units|
We can see that the PS4 and Xbox One battle in the US is well balanced, so we’ll see how much virtual reality will impact or notconsole sales in 2017.
