German motorways are again built vigorously: the A7, A2, and A3 in the coming years step by step around a specially secured and oversized track for smartphone users to be continued. The aim is to establish more road safety.
Mobile phone usage at the wheel is forbidden – for a good reason! Even the shortest deflection times can lead to serious accidents. But despite all the prohibitions, we see them almost daily on the asphalt meandering: people who use their smartphone in the car, telephone, read, copy. Keeping track of the display is a secondary issue when looking at the screen, thus endangering yourself and other traffic users.
“The use of smartphones is simply part of our modern society,” says Transport Minister Alexander Daubrindt, but the Ministry of Transport sees little more chance of reaching the goal by increasing the fines. “We have tried with poster advertising along the highways, With Draconian penalties – but people simply do not want to come to their senses, “says Daubrindt in conversation with this S-shaped motor travel book.
The completion of which the Federal Ministry of Transport expects no later than 2019, provides an extra-wide track on German motorways. Normally the lines are about 3.75 meters wide. The new smartphone track, for example on the A7 height Hamburg, will be nearly twice as wide at 6.50, to allow truck drivers to use the mobile phone while driving.
Special forms, which cover the existing or newly built guard rails, should bring the distracted drivers back into the smartphone track with a gentle force and at the same time prevent paint damage and the crossing of the roadway.
Smartphone tracks criticism of taxpayers
Even if there is hardly anything to shake about the project, there is resistance. Thus the taxpayer Federation criticizes the fact that extra-wide smartphone tracks on motorways would only be a transitional solution until the autonomous car becomes a reality. Because here – according to the argument – the electronics regulate the driving operation and one could allow the motorists the mobile phone usage even without the extra track.
