German engineering firm Hoffman and Krippner has claimed to have made an innovative steering wheel add-on device which would help in tackling the problem of driver drowsiness caused by drunk-driving, stokes or plain tiredness. This driving drowsiness is one of the leading cause for accidents worldwide. The company with its revolutionary new add-on feature has promised to do away with these evils.
The company has developed a pressures–sensing add-on for steering wheels that will constantly keep a check on the driver’s grip. the main idea behind this invention was that when drivers are awake and alert, they tend to have a firm grip on the steering wheel of the car. The drivers holds the wheel with firm pressure and constantly tilts his head while turning the wheels. Now, if unfortunately the driver suffers a stroke or is feeling dizzy after coming from a drinking arty where he had a few shots more than he could hold, then the driver will have a loose grip on the steering. It is this drop in pressure which the add-on device will note and alert the driver to wale them up or to pull over the car.
The device is made up of thin strip that’s applied to the inside rim of a manufacturer’s existing steering wheel, beneath the leather (or other) covering. That strip is made up of thin layers of foil, that have a weak electrical current running through them. When pressure is applied and causes the layers to touch one another, it creates a short circuit between those layers . An added benefit to the device would be the inclusion of hot spots, which the driver could use to activate features such as entertainment or communication without having the need to remove their hands from the steering wheel.
