It is already a habit for Samsung to launch two major Android handsets each year, including a new Galaxy S model in the first half, and a forthcoming Galaxy Note phablet in the second half of the year. In 2017, Samsung may reveal a third type of flagship, a device with a Samsung foldable screen.
A new report from Digitimes says that Samsung’s most audacious smartphone is expected later this year to begin limited production during the fourth quarter of 2017. This time of year when Apple sells most iPhones.
The iPhone 8 will present radical design changes, so it will be interesting to see if Samsung foldable smartphone will want to counter it with a Samsung foldable smartphone that would be unlike any available in the market. It is likely that the Galaxy Note 8 will also be in stores by then.
It is unclear at this point whether the Samsung folding phone will start selling in December. The report notes that mass-production of the smartphone can not begin until the second half of 2018. Samsung may have to overcome some technical problems, unidentified sources said.
Apparently, Samsung is dealing with issues involving the production and reliability of polyimide plastic covers for the screen, a key component of a phone that needs doubling.
For years, It has provoked foldable smartphones at various electronic shows. Multiple reports have pointed out that Samsung foldable smartphone will finally launch such a device this year. The company already has patents that describe the technology required for folding smartphones. Digitimes notes that competitors from Samsung, including Apple, LG and Microsoft also have similar patented inventions, suggesting that Samsung will not be alone in making folding smartphones in the future.
